Top tips for your visit
- · Book online in advance. Timed entry slots sell out on summer weekends.
- · Arrive early. The first slot of the day is the quietest and the light is beautiful for photos.
- · Wear comfy shoes. The approach is steep and cobbled — trainers beat heels every time.
- · Bring a jacket. The wind on the ramparts is famous. Even in July.
- · Allow two to three hours. Longer if you'd like to enjoy a coffee with a view.
- · Time it for the One O'Clock Gun. Fired at 13:00 every day except Sunday.
Accessibility
The castle sits on a rocky outcrop with steep cobbled paths, but there is a complimentary mobility vehicle from the Esplanade to the upper areas. Most of the main exhibits — including the Honours of Scotland and the National War Museum — are step-free once you're at the top. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout.
Facilities
- · Two cafés and a tea room with views across the city
- · Two gift shops (Scottish crafts, whisky, tartan)
- · Free cloakroom for coats and small bags
- · Baby-changing facilities in all main toilet blocks
- · Free Wi-Fi across the site
- · Multilingual audio guides (12 languages)
